Day 87 - 50kms

I woke up before 4:45am, belize is an hour behind mexico which means it is bright outside by 5:30am.....great for me!!

I left the village and made my way across the lake and back to mainland Belize. Although Crooked tree is not an island, it is only accessible by one route which is across a 1km wide lake. Once back on the Southern Highway I spend the next 6 hours plodding along relatively straight road towards the capital of Belize.

Belize City dose not have a great reputation for safety. In fact, Abert street was the most murderous street on the planet last year. So I made sure I picked my route carefully so that I didn't put myself in any unnessessary danger on my way through the city to the coast. The reason I was running into the city in the first place was to catch the boat out to Caye Caulker. Caye Caulker is an island on the Belizian Berrier Reef, it would be my home for the next week as it was time to take my scheduled 3 month break. This is a place I have been dreaming of visiting for a few years.

i made it to the boat dock just as the 4pm ferry was ready to leave, I was one of the last to squeeze into the boat and sat quietly for an hour watching in amazement as the tiny Caribbean islands went by.

wheb I got into the island I headed for my hostel, the Main Street of the island is a dirt road, no cars, just golf buggies allowed. I immodestly went for a swim and began to relax.

I wanted to take a step back from my run and get my mind off of it for a few days.

I think this place will be a good place to do this.
